TULSA, Okla., Dec. 6, 2018 – “Regardless of all the hype you’re hearing about machine learning and the like, you can’t just throw this tool at a big pile of data and it will just figure things out. It doesn’t work that way.”

This and other observations were offered by Stonebridge Consulting’s Trevor Hicks on Bulwark’s Oil and Gas Industry Leaders Podcast hosted by Paige Wilson.

In a far-ranging discussion covering his career in oil and gas information technology, Hicks, a managing director at Stonebridge, expanded on the data management challenges facing both the business and IT sides of the oil and gas industry.

“We’re in the business of helping our customers with what I’ll call data integrity,” Hicks says. “And [data integrity] is a term we don’t use often enough in the data management side of business. I use it deliberately to draw a parallel with asset integrity, which is a concept our customers immediately get. As oil and gas data experts, we talk a lot about data being a strategic asset because of the potential of big data analytics and machine learning. But all that depends on having a good data platform underneath the hood. So, when we try to motivate our customers to invest in good data management and good data practices, it helps to use the language of assets as it is used in the oil and gas business. And what I mean by that is ensuring that assets are doing the job they were designed to do, and that they’re being operated safely and efficiently. And we should draw the same kind of parallels with how you are managing your data.”

Trevor holds a bachelor’s degree in math from the University of Tulsa, a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin, and a master’s degree in business administration from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.
